Speaking of scares, Janiak begins with an eye-popping cold open that perfectly sets the tone. So, when a slasher is at their heels, our hearts are in our throats. With such complexities, Graziadei and Janiak create characters, who don’t feel familiar or rehashed, but authentic and alive. For instance, there’s the cheerleader (Julia Rehwald) who is valedictorian and a drug dealer, and her bestie, the wise-cracking goofball (Fred Hechinger) who’s balancing school with a demanding job to be sure his siblings are fed. Instead, we’re granted characters who refuse to fit into cookie-cutter molds. There’s no wholesome Final Girl, ditzy sex-crazed blonde, doped-up screw-up, or brainless jock in this crew. These are not the slasher stereotypes called out in self-aware horror hits like Scream and The Cabin In The Woods. Yet screenwriters Phil Graziadei and Leigh Janiak (who also helms the trilogy) dig deeper by unearthing fresh and fascinating characters. It’s a solid setup, blending teen slashers with occult horror. So, Deena’s quest of reckless romantic vengeance against her ex swiftly spins her friends into a witchy mystery that puts several resurrected killers on their trail. Staying true to Stine’s formula, life-or-death stakes with an edge of supernatural terror are woven through a high school melodrama, studded with rivalries, jealousies, cliques, lust, and dangerous impulses.
